What we offer instead depends on why you were considering a planetary gearbox: if efficiency is the driver, our BG series spiral bevel gearboxes reach 94–97 % at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 — the IC design is coaxial. If you need a high reduction in a small envelope, our worm gearboxes cover up to 100:1 and up to 1,958 Nm, at a markedly lower efficiency but with self-locking. For a backlash of ≤ 0.1 arcmin we have no substitute — we would rather say so plainly than put you off with a consultation.
Planetary Gearboxes
On the technology, because it still needs explaining: a planetary gearbox spreads the load across several planet gears and therefore achieves very low backlash in a compact envelope — the PTSC series managed ≤ 0.1 arcmin at over 95 % efficiency per stage. Anyone asking us today gets something else, depending on the requirement: if efficiency in a 90° or coaxial arrangement is the point, it is the BG series spiral bevel gearboxes at 94–97 % for ratios of 1:1 to 3:1. If the point is a high reduction in a small envelope, it is the worm gearboxes up to 100:1 and 1,958 Nm — at a markedly lower efficiency, but self-locking. For a backlash of ≤ 0.1 arcmin we have no substitute in our range; we would rather say so up front.

Frequently Asked Questions
Backlash describes the angular offset between input and output shaft when the direction of rotation reverses. The PTSC planetary gearboxes reached a maximum of 0.1 arcmin, making them virtually backlash-free — decisive for positioning applications such as CNC machines, robotics and rotary tables. We no longer stock this series, and our current range holds no substitute for it: the BG series spiral bevel gearboxes are designed for efficiency and redirection, not for backlash freedom of that order.
Planetary gearboxes are generally characterised by high efficiency, typically above 95 % per stage. This follows from load sharing across several planet gears and is markedly higher than a worm gearbox. In our current range the BG series spiral bevel gearboxes come closest: 94–97 % overall efficiency at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1, with the IC design also coaxial.
The PTSC planetary gearboxes were designed for up to 20,000 operating hours and kept their precision across that service life. Actual life depends on load, speed and ambient temperature. For gearboxes from our current range we will gladly calculate the service life at your actual operating point.
Transmissible torques varied with frame size and ratio across the PTSC series; load sharing across several planet gears allows high torque in a compact design. As we no longer stock the series, there is no current catalogue for it. For a design using available gearboxes, send us torque, speed and shaft arrangement — we will work it through on our bevel and worm gearboxes.
The PTSC planetary gearboxes were suitable for any mounting position: lifetime lubrication and sealed ball bearings made the mounting orientation irrelevant. On the bevel and worm gearboxes available today, the permissible mounting position varies with design and lubrication — we settle that before you order.
The PTSC planetary gearboxes were designed for servo and stepper motors and adapted to common motor interfaces. We no longer offer pre-assembled gearbox-and-motor combinations. Servo drives, stepper motors and backlash-free servo couplings remain in our range; as the gearbox alongside them, the BG series spiral bevel gearboxes are the candidate.
The PTSC planetary gearboxes came in single and multi-stage versions: single-stage typically 3:1 to 10:1, multi-stage up to 100:1 and beyond, with low backlash throughout. For comparison with our current range: the BG series spiral bevel gearboxes cover 1:1 to 3:1, the worm gearboxes reach up to 100:1 — there, however, with self-locking and lower efficiency.
