Cage Positive Guidance

Cage positive guidance is a mechanical synchronization system for the rolling element cage — typically via rack and pinion. It prevents the undesired cage creep that can occur under high dynamics, vibrations, or frequent direction reversals.

Operating Principle

Without positive guidance, the cage moves passively through the friction forces of the rolling elements. Under uneven loading, vibrations, or frequent direction changes, the cage can undergo a relative motion with respect to the carriage and drift out of its target zone (cage creep). Cage positive guidance couples the cage positively to the carriage motion, typically via a pinion rolling on a rack fixed to the carriage, thereby keeping the cage at exactly half the carriage speed. This principle is particularly common in crossed-roller guides and precision-demanding applications.

Application Areas

Cage positive guidance is standard in crossed-roller guides and high-precision profiled rail guides of accuracy class P or SP. It is especially relevant for highly dynamic axes, vertical axes with varying weight loads, and applications subject to vibration — for example in coordinate measuring technology, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, optical systems, and machine tools.
