Line Contact
In line contact, a cylindrical roller touches the raceway along a straight line rather than at a point. The load is distributed over a larger area — resulting in higher load capacity, lower surface pressure, and greater stiffness compared to ball point contact.
Definition and Effect
Line contact occurs when a cylindrical roller rolls on a cylindrical or flat raceway. According to Hertzian contact theory, this results in an elliptically elongated, nearly line-shaped contact zone. Compared to the point contact of a ball, the pressure area is considerably larger, so that a significantly higher load can be supported at the same rolling element diameter. In roller guides (profiled rail guides with rollers), this principle is used to achieve several times the load rating of ball guides at the same size.
Practical Significance
Roller guides with line contact are preferred wherever high machining forces, heavy workpieces, or large moments occur — for example in machining centers, heavy gantry machines, or presses. The disadvantage compared to ball-guided systems is the slightly reduced maximum travel speed and the increased manufacturing effort for the raceway geometry.
