Eddy-Current Losses

Eddy-current losses occur when a moving magnetic field induces currents in an electrically conductive component. In magnetic couplings, this mainly affects the metallic containment shell.

Cause and Avoidance

When the coupling's magnetic field rotates relative to a conductive containment-shell wall, eddy currents are induced in that wall and lost as heat. The losses increase with speed, field strength and the conductivity or wall thickness of the material. They can be reduced by non-conductive materials (ceramic, PEEK, plastic) or thinner walls — with metallic shells, adequate heat dissipation must be planned.
