Magnetic Coupling
A magnetic coupling transmits torque without contact via a magnetic field from a drive to a driven shaft — with no mechanical contact and therefore no wear on the power transmission itself.
Definition
In a magnetic coupling, magnet rotors are mounted on the drive and driven sides, with their fields interpenetrating. Torque is transmitted purely through the magnetic coupling, allowing both sides to remain fully separated mechanically. This separation can be made hermetically tight using a non-magnetic wall (containment shell).
Permanent-Magnet and Hysteresis Couplings
Two main types are distinguished: the permanent-magnet coupling couples synchronously (pole to pole) and transmits a load-dependent torque without slip up to the pull-out torque. The hysteresis coupling transmits an almost constant, speed-independent torque via a hysteresis material and is suited to soft starting and defined slip torques. Typical applications are pumps, agitators and applications requiring hermetic sealing.
